Against Gupta?

According to The Huffington Post, Rep. John Conyers is leading the fight against Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General. Part of his letter to House colleagues:

I join in opposition with respected Noble Peace Prize award wining economist Paul Krugman, who has very serious concerns with having Dr. Gupta be the nation's Surgeon General. [...]
Also, there are highly experienced medical professionals who question whether Dr. Gupta has the necessary experience or even the medical background to be in charge of some 6,000 physicians or more who work in the United States Public Health Service.

First, why does anyone care what Paul Krugman has to say about this, especially given that the Michael Moore spat which everyone is throwing a fuss over is so minor? Second, it's the GODDAMN SURGEON GENERAL. Not only does Gupta seem "qualified," but it seems like Sanjay Gupta has been America's Surgeon General for a decade anyway. Conyers must be bored out of his mind.
