Little Kids Walking Into People

Why is it that when you have a mom and her 5 year old walking toward you on a narrow sidewalk or in a corridor, the kid always just walks right into you, forcing the mom to grab his/her hand and drag him to the side? Don't they see that there is a sizable person coming at them that will prevent them from walking on the left side?
