Yes Man

If I really wanted to, I could bob and weave through a review, beating furiously around the bush. Instead, I'll be blunt: "Painfully retarded" might be going overboard, but "retarded" certainly is not. Yes Man did little to help remedy an already-terrible 2008 for Zooey Deschanel.

I was going make a "Who greenlights these movies?" quip, but then I realized the answer to that would be: Smart people. This thing cost $70M and grossed $225M worldwide. WHAT IN THE CHRIST? I don't even know who the audience for this is. Even Jim Carrey's most die-hard fanatics, who I almost count myself among, should have realized this would be awful. (Hint: Fun With Dick and Jane, The Number 23.) Old people don't really like Jim Carrey. Thirtysomethings may have affection for Dumb and Dumber-era Carrey, but anyone with a brain can tell that that incarnation has long since passed us by. Kids? This isn't a movie for kids under ~11, and most teenagers would probably think this looked--to use a popular euphemism--gay. Who in the name of fuck is paying money to see this in theaters?
